As part of the world-wide commemorations of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, please check out our film series featuring the work of documentary filmmaker, legend and friend of mine, Robert Richter. Our next installment is tomorrow — Thursday, August 6th at 7 pm EST.
First up is Bob's Oscar-nominated Gods of Metal. Released in 1982, this documentary short highlights the role of Catholics and Christians working to stop the nuclear arms race. The second film The Ultimate Wish: Ending the Nuclear Age I made with Bob in 2013 and it features my dear friend Sakue Shimohira, a survivor of the Nagasaki atomic bombing. In this 40 minute film we make the connection between nuclear weapons and nuclear power, in the wake of the 2011 Fukushima disaster.
I hope you can join us on-line as we remember the victims and survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and those affected by the on-going nuclear catastrophe in Fukushima.
As our beloved Setsuko Thurlow said in her Nobel Lecture — “When I was a 13-year-old girl, trapped in the smoldering rubble, I kept pushing. I kept moving toward the light. And I survived. Our light now is the ban treaty. To all in this hall and all listening around the world, I repeat those words that I heard called to me in the ruins of Hiroshima: Don’t give up! Keep pushing! See the light? Crawl towards it… No matter what obstacles we face, we will keep moving and keep pushing and keep sharing this light with others. This is our passion and commitment for our one precious world to survive.”
