GLOBAL CITIZEN: It’s the International Day Of Education


The world is going through an education crisis! Due to COVID-19, 1.5 billion children and youth have been impacted by school closures across 184 countries. Millions of these children live in poverty and can’t access remote learning, leaving them at risk of missing out on an education. 13-year-old Hawo* from Somalia has been hard hit due to COVID-19-related school closures. This comes 3 years after her previous village suffered from a drought, disrupting her education. With no access to TV or radio in her new village, Hawo couldn’t continue her studies. “I don’t know when we will be able to go back, so that I can continue my education and meet my friends,” she says. Global Citizen, for the most vulnerable children, education is lifesaving. Not only does it provide safety and protection, it also instils hope for a brighter future.
